Weights plus cardio is answer to teen obesity

Combining cardio with strength training is the most effective program to fight teen obesity, new research finds.

"Obesity is an epidemic among youth," said Dr. Ron Sigal from the University of Calgary's Institute for Public Health.

Researchers at the University of Calgary and also the University of Ottawa set out to determine just that in the Healthy Eating Aerobic and Resistance Training in Youth study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics Monday.

Using 304 overweight teens in the Ottawa-Gatineau region between the ages of 14 and 18, participants received diet counselling for four weeks prior to being randomly placed into four sections: The very first group used weight machines and dumbells; the 2nd performed only cardio on treadmills, elliptical exercise machines and stationary bicycles; the 3rd combined aerobic and strength training; the last group didn't exercise.

The 3 exercise programs resulted in significantly more weight loss -- measured by a MRI -- compared to the diet-only control group.

Overall, each kind of exercise reduced body fat significantly and similarly, said co-principal researcher Dr. Glen Kenny of the University of Ottawa's school of human kinetics.

"When we checked out both aerobic and resistance training by themselves, they certainly confirmed some important benefits to the participant, in terms of weight loss," said Kenny.

However the combination of cardio with weight resistance "did provide greater overall changes in weight loss," including fat loss, reductions in excess fat, and waist circumference, Kenny said.

Teens within the combined aerobic plus resistance group lost seven centimetres in the waistline, compared to four centimetres the type of performing only one kind of exercise.
